Recommendation letter from former manager?

Hello,
I am currently working on several applications (for October deadlines) and considering who to ask to write my recommendations. A bit of background: I currently live and work in East Africa in donor-funded private sector development. Before moving here, I worked in management consulting in the US.
I have a few options and am unsure which would be the most effective combination:
1. Current boss: He is supportive of me getting an MBA, gives me very good reviews, and is generally happy with my performance. However, he is based in another country, gets involved in my work about once or twice per month (which is a major part of why he likes me), and likely will not have enough detailed information to give examples of my performance.
2. Former boss at same company: My former manager (whose job I was promoted to) knows me much better and would have good details to share, but she has not worked with me in the more senior role (both management, but current job is much more senior). We stopped working together 1.5 years ago but are still in touch.
3. Former boss from US in consulting (4+ years ago): My rationale for including this person would be to show that I have performed well in the private sector. We have kept in touch and so he has a general sense of my work now, but it was a more junior position.
My first thought was to pick the first two, but I wonder if that is problematic that they are both from the same company (where I have worked for 2.5 years) and so ignore my previous (and quite different) experience. Any thoughts?
Thanks!!
