For recommendation letters, I know that content matters much more than length, but I was wondering what the average recommendation letter length was.
I was thinking of asking for 600-800 word references (around 1-1.5 pages single spaced), but from the looks of things it seems like maybe 800-1000 words (1.5-2 pages single spaced) would probably be better suited to responding to the questions.
What do you guys think?

Well, assuming that the school isn't imposing response lengths, I would look at things this way. For each response to a question, the recommendation would probably make a statement and then back it up with a detailed example. This may make for a 2-3 paragraph response, and for questions that ask for multiple items (multiple strengths, attributes, weaknesses, etc.) the length would have to increase correspondingly.
Then take into account if you’re planning to use the same letter for multiple schools. If that is true the letter would ideally answer a consolidated set of questions from all the schools. This may make for many questions to respond to (10+ if you have many schools).
It would not be surprising then, for a great recommendation letter used across multiple schools to be multiple pages long.

Every school I applied to last year had either a word limit or maximum length on recommendations. But none that I can remember simply said "write a recommendation for so and so to attend our program"--they typically asked a handful of specific questions (each with limits on length) in addition to having the recommender rank the applicant quantitatively in a series of categories.
