Today I just found out that my department manager is leaving November 12. Can I still consider this person as a current supervisior if I plan to submit applications in Januray? I really don't trust anyone else at my job to write letters for me. Thanks.

Thanks rr. Just wondering, how would I address this in the optional essay? Will a simple paragraph explaining the circumstances do, or will I need to write a long essay about what this person meant to me etc.?

Doesnt need to be much. You asked them to do it when they were your immediate supervisor because they best knew your abilities. However, he/she recently has excepted a new position at a new company. He/she still is the person who can best speak to my abilities. Obviously put a little more thought into it but three or four sentences is enough...you aren't trying to explain away why you didn't ask your supervisor. I am sure in todays working environment where people switch companies every few years this is pretty common.
