Let's begin with a fish story!
A man was walking down the beach one morning.
Toward the far end of the beach, he noticed a small figure running about, bending over from time to time, then going closer to the waves and flinging something into the sea.
The man reached closer and saw a boy intently rescuing starfish.
"There are hundreds of those," he said to the boy, "What difference will you make?"
The boy bent down, picked up a starfish, and as he was flinging it back to where it belonged, he said:
"Made a difference to that one!"

Why am I narrating this?
Not only because it is one of my favorite stories but also because it relates to an advice I give MBA candidates when we brainstorm achievement or failure anecdotes for essays.
It is not always about the numbers you reach or the size of the project or the brand of the company you work for.
Narrating impact is also about your unique approach to identifying a problem and deciding to do something about it.
The boy went against the tide to save one starfish at a time because he had conviction in his action.
When was the last time you showed such resolve? When was the last time you took a risk to pursue your gut feeling? How did it pan out?
Perhaps you succeeded. May be you failed. But you sure did identify a starfish worth saving and put in your best efforts. Wow! After all, isn't that what leadership is all about?
