Hey everyone, I have some exciting and unexpected news to share! I applied to UCLA in Round 2 and was waitlisted. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to hear back from them at this stage. However, I just received an acceptance letter from them. The only downside is that they didn't offer me any financial aid, which puts me in a bit of a predicament.
Let me provide some context here: Last year, I was completing my master's degree, and during that time, I didn't have the opportunity to work and burned a big part of my savings. So, entering UCLA this year without any kind of financial aid would be quite challenging for me.
One option would be taking up a loan for the full amount (which I think is too much...). Another option would be reapplying for next year after retaking the GMAT so I have bigger chances to be considered for scholarships (my score now is 660).
But here's where I need your advice: If I decide not to accept the offer this year and reapply next year after improving my GMAT score, how would the admissions committee view my application? Would they blacklist me and never accept me again? Is there any chance of receiving an acceptance letter and financial aid if I enhance my GMAT score?
I applied to 5 T15 this year and was only called for an interview at UCLA, but I'm sure that my GMAT score is holding me back. I'm a European woman with +4 years of experience in IT Project Management looking forward to switching to Product Management.
I would greatly appreciate your insights and guidance regarding this situation. Thank you in advance for your help!
p.s: I'm also trying to negotiate a scholarship for this year, but I find it highly unlikely

Hi. Congratulations on your unexpected Admit.
I have a quick and fairly proven answer. A lot of people ran into the same situation in the last three years during the pandemic. People would get admitted to a bunch of programs and then they would pick one choose the referral and then reapply again next year too often the same programs hoping to get better scholarship and so on and so forth.
The surprising part is that admissions seem to have the memory of a mayfly. There’s no blacklisting. There is no retaliation or anything like that. There are many reasons why people may have chosen not to have gone to business schools. It could’ve been personal it could’ve been financial or a promotion at work and so on and so forth. Most of the time there are valid reasons.
Imagine the situation, someone applied to school that they really liked but could not attend so they have reapplied the following year. It’s still their favorite school so don’t be silly for the school not to admit them. You may be surprised to hear it but schools do like re-applicants despite of their status.
You can also always contact the admissions team and explain to them your current challenge and that you’re not able to attend this year and see if they would offer you a deferral. I think the chances of that are slim but there’s no downside either. On the upside, if you have a deferral, do you have at least one option that you can pursue next year and anything on top of that is gravy.
