I know for a fact that OG explanations are not always correct. Sometimes they are just terribly worded.

In this specific case - the "fossils of the arm of a sloth" is the phrase - and it would be terribly confusing to refer to just the "sloth" within this nested structure. Clearly a case to use pronoun ambiguity.
