Hi,
I'm not a native English speaker and would really appreciate some help!
What is the difference between:
1. Remaining calm since its eruption in 1984, Mauna Lao, the second largest volcano in the world, has presented a wealth of attractions for curious and adventurous tourists to explore.
and
2. Having remained calm since its eruption in 1984, Mauna Lao, the second largest volcano in the world, has presented a wealth of attractions for curious and adventurous tourists to explore.
I chose No. 2, but apparently, No. 1 is the better option.
Is this about the verb tenses, or are there any other special rules regarding participle modifiers?
I know that the progressive form ("remaining") is indicative of a general ongoing action, while the perfect form ("having remained") is indicative of an activity that started in the past but its results are still relevant to the present...
