Hello,
I was hoping to have my profile evaluated for the top 10 schools. I appreciate the insight.
Information: White, Male, late 20's
1) Brief description of full-time work experience
Current: Business Development & Project Development for 30+ person renewables company (coming up on 1 year anniversary)
Main duties:
- Opened up office for company in new market
- Cover all business development related activity in that market, as well lead for acquisitions in new markets
- Manage ~10 person team to develop projects; have active role in development, sales, marketing, financial modeling, project finance, acquisitions, etc.
Previous: Business Development Associate at large wind energy company (200+ person co.) (2+ Years)
- Responsible for management and implementation of new technology in new markets, as well as normal project development activity
- Led development on acquisition of large solar portfolio
Previous: Real estate development for family owned business (2 years)
2) GMAT
710 (Q45 V42)
3) Education:
Northeast liberal arts school (top 20; think Williams, Wesleyan, Tufts)
B.A. Religion; minor English
GPA 3.4+
Cum Laude & Honors
4) Significant college / post-college extra-curricular activities / leadership experience
- Member of Big Brothers for 2+ years
- Adviser/Volunteer to newly formed school focused on alternative learning (2 months)
- Active volunteer in college (Admissions, fraternity rush chair)
- Current member of athletic club (squash, etc.)
5) Your target programs
- Kellogg
- GSB
- Sloan
6) When you plan to apply?
R1 2014-2015
7) Post-MBA goal
Venture Capital with focus on clean-tech/energy companies
Long-term goal:
C-level at energy company or specialized real estate development co.
Chances: Could you tell me what are my chances to get into top 10? It would be help to have an expert's opinion on whether my non-traditional background allows me to have a chance at the top programs.

Hi there,
Thanks for your post. Overall it sounds like you have a solid profile, and I think with a good application, would be considered at top 10 programs. Keep in mind that Stanford is generally a challenge for everyone, especially with it's class size being a lot smaller than many/the others you mention, so it will be a reach, but certainly if you are passionate about it and want to give it a shot, go for it. I would generally feel good about your applications to Kellogg and Sloan again WITH strong applications/essays/recommendations/interviews.
Sure having a less common background or industry can be a plus as you could contribute a different perspective/background to class discussions. I think your experience opening up a new office for the company in a new market is great experience; and in managing a team you likely will have some experiences to draw from in terms of leadership, influencing and motivating others, etc. Your prior experience with business development at a larger company is a nice balance to currently working for the smaller company as well.
GMAT and GPA are ok/slightly below average; GMAT quant could be higher. Advisor to the school is an interesting volunteer role that might be worth focusing on/detailing more.
I think your essays will be very important as that will be where you really show more about who you are, what you'll bring to the program, your accomplishments, your strengths and weaknesses, why you know you need/want the MBA, and how that particular school is right for you. Be sure to devote a lot of time and effort to your essays and applications.
