Repeating Questions in subsequent guides

Question

Hi, I wish to know if a chunk of the questions in a GMAC guide are repeated in a later edition. Say 2015 vs 2016 editions. Thank you in advance.

Yes, most of the questions 'carry over' from one version of the GMAC Books to the next.

From your post, it's not clear how far you are into your studies. Before I can offer you the specific advice that you're looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How long have you studied?
2) What materials have you used?
3) How have you scored on each of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

I have just started my studies. I got Manhattan SC and CR. I am getting Powerscore RC soon (I hear it's the best for RC - not sure). I have NOT taken any CATs or timed tests yet. But my target score is 730+ so I can apply to a "good" PhD Finance program (not ivy league though). I will graduate this fall, and hope to take it by October so I can apply for Fall 2017 admission.

Given my background (Bsc. Actuarial science, Msc. Mathematics, MA. Economics), I am not too worried about the quant section. That said, I'm not going to play with that. In fact, I plan to go through the entire GMAT bible and using the official quant OG.

My initial question stems from the fact that I have the 2015 OGs and wondering if it was worth buying a 2016/17 edition. How many new questions will be added? My biggest concern is RC on the verbal. Usually, I have to read the passage more than once to grasp what it's about. Is it only me or it happens to "everyone"? I doubt time will permit that, given that there are a number of RC passages. What is the way out here? Thank you once again.

Hi bapellasadiq,

Since you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can download 2 for free from www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 4 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can talk through your study plan.

Since you currently have a set of OG books, you don't have to concern yourself yet with whether you'll need additional ones or not. You'll likely need to invest in some non-book resources at some point, but we'll be better able to define that once you've taken a CAT and gotten in some study time.

Here's a post with all the problems in the 2016 OG that weren't in the 2015 edition. The 2013 edition is actually identical to the 2015. The new 2017 OG has even fewer changes: 130 new problems in the main OG and 45 new problems in each of the Quant and Verbal Review books.
