Which is the correct form of reported speech for the above sentence?

a) I asked how old you are/were.
b) I asked how old he was.

not sure but i think:
I asked him/her how old he/she was.

may be correct.

I think both are correct, regarding who are you reporting to.

I asked how old you were => Repeat the question to the subject

I asked how old he/she was => Repeat the question to an audience
