Hi,
There are many successful applicants and current students on this forum, and I wonder if they could share knowledge that could help me with an application decision.
I applied to Wharton 2 years in a row for admission to Fall 2011 and Fall 2012. I gained an interview for Fall 2011 (failed to convert) but was dinged without interview for Fall 2012. I only applied to top few or bust and didn't apply to any school last year.
Now 2 years later, I've moved on to a new job and have 1 new strong recommendation from an EC. However, for the 2nd recommendation, I'll have to use someone who also recommended me in the previous apps and the content is going to be pretty much the same (former employer).
My essays and app is ready for W (the only school I have time to apply to this year and would be happy to matric if accepted), but I'm in a fix if I should apply with the same recommendation with which is was dinged twice. As much as I'd hate to wait any longer (older applicant in 30s), I feel that I may get dinged again and would lose any shot next year. My other option is to wait and apply R1 next year with a new 2nd recommender.
Is there evidence that a recommender being the same as in the previous 2 applications going to hurt me significantly?
Also Wharton has apparently a very large word limit for recommender questions with respect to other schools -- 500 words each for 3 questions is total 1500 words. Can a recommender write about 200 words for each 500 word recommender question for W?
I doubt a recommender will write so much more when you compare it to equivalent schools such as total 500 words of HBS.
I'd be interested to know how the successful applicants here worked with recommenders who know nothing about mba recommendations. Sure one provides them with a list of accomplishments, but still non-mba people just find the mba recommendation questions weird, which makes it harder to trust what they would eventually and independently submit.

At the end of the day, this is going to be a judgment call on your part -- but my bias is that I would think/hope you've done more to enhance your application in the past two years than simply find a new job. What do they say the definition of insanity is -- "Doing the same things over and over but expecting different results?" Is there no one else you can use .. and/or ask your writer to 'take a different slant' in this year's letter?
Just some thoughts. There won't be a 'right' answer here -- encourage you to get many opinions.

Hey, I'm not sure what you decided to do given you posted 4 days ago but here's my $0.02. The deadline is tomorrow and it doesn't strike me that you're in a position to apply this year. You're asking some questions that were probably best answered a few weeks ago at the latest. For example, if Wharton gives recommenders 500 words per question, 200 won't cut it. They don't have to write 499 either, but what detail can be conveyed in 200 short words? If you're concerned about this recommender, swap him out next year but, more importantly, put forward a strong strategy for R1. Pick the right schools, dedicate the time, prep your recommenders HEAVILY well in advance and go from there. I understand you're getting older but a third application to Wharton when you're struggling with your recs probably won't give you the results you're looking for mate.
