Thanks, Jon. I actually am looking at applying Round 2, but I left my job recently (to free up time to both apply directly to jobs and for an MBA, the latter as a backup option) so I think it will be just barely doable...

Welllll... if you are working on those applications full-time, then :)

Sorry, one more question for you: would it change things if I left my job mid-Oct and am currently between jobs? Someone else I asked said that in that scenario, the odds of my getting into a top-5 school (or any with <15% admittance rate) are vanishingly low, to the extent that I shouldn't bother applying to those schools.

Your friend is right. You become a HUGE risk for them. Being unemployed when you apply is one of the worst things you can do unfortunately, especially for top schools, because from their perspective it endangers your future employability. If you have some gig coming up - i.e Teach America, Peace Cops, a job that begins in Jan, or you have joined the family company, then great. But if you have nothing nothing, its probably a good idea to push off your application until you have employment.

Oh, wow, that is stronger advice than I expected. Appreciate the candor.

Would even schools like Ross, Fuqua, McCombs be a long shot in this situation?

Would it help to say that I am freelancing as a behavioral designer - i.e. advising companies on the behavioral design of their products (I am, as part of my effort to transition to a product mgmt role for a company focused on health behavior change, but I only have one pro-bono client).

Hey there,
Well I would for sure give schools like Ross, Fuqua, McCombs a shot. I mean if right now you are unemployed, then you certainly have nothing to lose! But it's really important that you try and fill the time as much as you can (I mean of your employment) with narrative of things you are doing (without exaggerating overmuch).

Take into consideration this weakness when establishing your school list too.

Best,
Jon
