Hi,
UG GPA: 3.8 in Economics at top 15 non-Ivy private school
GMAT: 760 (49Q/45V, 6 AWA, 8 IR)
Asian American, 25 years old
work: 3 years of buy-side equity research at a top 5 asset manager
EC: leadership in numerous college clubs & a fraternity. mentoring asian-american immigrant middle/high schoolers outside of work currently.
Schools: Booth, CBS, Fuqua, HBS, Kellogg, Tuck, Wharton, Yale SOM
Goal: transition away from public market investing to business operations & strategy via management consulting
What do you think my chances are now as is? Should I seek out another year of work experience at another company? A lateral after 3 years would most likely be within the investing space in finance and I'm not sure if it's worth it to get closer to the top B schools' median of 4-5 years of experience at the risk of possibly hobbling my application story.

Hi there,
I would say based on limited info here that you have a good start to your profile, and I wouldn't say that adding another year or two just for the sake of '# of years' will make a big difference, UNLESS you feel you'd really make even more impact or show even more leadership during that year that will than better position your resumes, essays, and recommendations. So think on that point. But having 3 years when you apply, 4 when matriculate is while a touch lower than average, still pretty common. You may just need to stress the QUALITY of your experiences, and why NOW is the right time to apply vs waiting longer. Probably the bigger challenge is simply that there are a large # of applicants with similar strong profiles, and with the school caliber you've mentioned, it can be tough to stand out from the crowd, so HBS/Wharton will be a reach as they are for most, and the others still a challenge but your stats and basic professional profile will help you hopefully get some interviews if you do a great job on your apps, and then go from there. Good luck!

Thanks for your feedback. Just a quick clarification -- I meant to say that I would have 3 years of work experience at matriculation. Does that make a difference at all vs. the median of 4-5? Or would you still stand by your emphasis on quality of experience?
