Hello everyone,

I am a 23 M Indian. I am applying for a few deferred MBA programs this spring. I would appreciate your advice on my profile below-

Undergraduate qualifying law program (L.L.B) at a top 5 National Law University in India

Co-founder, India's first legal aid citizenship cell (We have advised and helped hundreds of migrants in India with their citizenship and residence applications, including representing them at the Foreigners Legal Tribunal in India)

Heading to a big law firm's Insolvency & restructuring team in Mumbai (India does not allow foreign law firms to operate in India, therefore, we have large local law firms)

Admitted to the Bar in India

GRE- 170Q 170V 5AWA

Started a virtual arbitration platform for Insolvency matters that decreased the average time for disposal of a case by 10 times (Had to be shut down because regulatory changes made it illegal to offer private dispute resolution service in India)

Co-founder, India's first legal aid citizenship cell (We have advised and helped hundreds of migrants in India with their citizenship and residence applications, including representing them at Foreigners Legal Tribunal in India)

Represented India at the United Nations in a cross border insolvency conference

Multiple Research paper publications in reputed journals (one of my papers that was published in a Yale Law journal has been cited 50+ times)

Co-authored a textbook on Insolvency and bankruptcy law that is now prescribed as a textbook in at least 2 universities in India.

Internship experience in India, the USA, UK, and Italy (all law-related internships, including one at the United Nations)

Short-term Goals- Use my Insolvency and restructuring law experience to pivot to the domain of turnaround consulting. Interested in joining either boutique turnaround consulting firms such as A&M, Alix Partners, or turnaround and restructuring teams of Big 4/MBB.

Long-term Goal- Aspire to secure appointments as a Bankruptcy Trustee, a role regulated by the court and requiring proficiency in insolvency law and management. Additionally, I aspire to establish a boutique consulting firm that provides a blend of legal and managerial support to struggling businesses.

Target Schools- All M7 schools.

All advice is welcome. If you can share your opinion on the following questions, I'd be grateful.

Do you think my goals are reasonable?

1. Frankly, you do inspire confidence in your calibre and ability; whether or not you have the interest/ passion to do so hasn't come out (at least in your self description).
2. With other factors going pretty solid in your favour, your career goal would have to show clarity and maturity, and it would really depend on your articulation.

Would taking any quant-based course eg- MBA Math add to my profile? I am worried that adcoms might be concerned about my lack of quantitative skills.

With your exceptional GRE score, the clear answer to MBA Math is NO (won't help strengthen your application for admissions)

Inchoateapplicant

Should I even apply to HSW? I am not sure if my profile is competitive for these schools.

Your work with Migrants, helping them with Citizenship and legal aid come across as powerful (though in a domain very different from turnaround consulting); your stories and essays will therefore need to be compelling and convincing. Also, the career goal, and how it comes across will be another deal-clincher here.
Overall, HSW will be happy to go deeper into your application, but convincing them will be key; remember there are far fewer seats for Deferred Applicants; your competition therefore, is much higher.

What are my odds at non-HSW M7 schools?

Thanks! I appreciate your help!

Same as answers above. Hope it helps

Thanks!

Your profile is certainly distinctive and competitive, with a strong blend of legal expertise and entrepreneurial initiative. Your GRE score should alleviate any concerns about your quantitative skills, so additional quant-based courses may not be necessary.

Your goals seem well thought out and reasonable, aligning with your background and experience. As for applying to HSW and other M7 schools, your unique profile does make you a competitive candidate. It's worth noting that firms like A&M recruit from ISB, so if you're considering an MBA in India, that could be a strategic option as well.

If you're looking for a more in-depth analysis or strategy discussion, feel free to schedule a free call with us. We've successfully guided candidates through deferred admissions for these programs before. Here's the link to set up a session - https://calendly.com/scorequest

Do you think my goals are reasonable?

A: Yes, they are fine. I would tweak them slightly, but it's a good start.

Would taking any quant-based course eg- MBA Math add to my profile? I am worried that adcoms might be concerned about my lack of quantitative skills.

A: No, you are fine. A quant-based course is not going to give you added credibility. This is a commonly held myth.

Should I even apply to HSW? I am not sure if my profile is competitive for these schools.

A: If you really want to go there and have the time, you should.

What are my odds at non-HSW M7 schools?

A: Fairly solid. Overall, deferred MBA programs are notoriously challenging. So, you might in a situation where you get into lower-ranked schools via the deferred MBA admissions process. That would still be great, but you may wonder whether it makes sense to accept your offer now or try again for your preferred, higher-ranked schools via full-time admissions. That's not anything you can or should prepare for, but something you should you should be aware of.

Hello Inchoateapplicant,

I hope you are doing well. Your short-term and long-term goals are both reasonable and achievable. Your experience in insolvency and restructuring law, strong academic record, and extracurricular activities make you a well-qualified candidate for a deferred MBA program.

Taking a quant-based course could add to your profile.
While your GRE scores are strong, taking a quant-based course, such as MBA Math, could further demonstrate your quantitative skills to admissions committees. This is especially relevant given your interest in turnaround consulting, a field that often requires strong analytical and quantitative skills.

Applying to HSW is challenging.

While your profile is strong, it is always challenging to get into HSW schools. However, your unique experiences in legal aid citizenship, arbitration, and insolvency law, combined with your strong academic record and extracurricular activities, make you a compelling candidate. It is definitely worth applying to these schools.

Your odds at non-HSW M7 schools are good.

Your chances of admission to non-HSW M7 schools are good. Your strong academic record, relevant work experience, and compelling extracurricular activities make you a competitive applicant. However, it is important to remember that the admissions process at these schools is highly competitive, and there are no guarantees.

Start your application process early. The earlier you start, the more time you will have to polish your essays, letters of recommendation, and other application materials.

We offer a limited number of complimentary profile evaluations each week. We match you with the students and alums of top B-Schools according to your background and target schools. In this call, the experts will try to dig out your USP for top B-schools and provide you with honest feedback on your profile and chances to your target schools.

Feel free to schedule a free profile evaluation call with us to discuss your profile better and give a fair evaluation of your chances of admission to top Business schools.
