Researchers conducted a survey of corporations in a particular industry to determine, for each of four industry-accepted best practices—Practices A, B, C, and D—how prevalent conformity to that practice is. The researchers grouped the corporations according to the total number of people each employs, including an equal number in each group. For each practice, the graph shows the conformity as the percent of corporations in each group that conform to the practice. For example, the graph shows that approximately 50% of the corporations with greater than 500 employees conform to Practice B.

Researchers conducted a survey of corporations in a particular industry to determine, for each of four industry-accepted best practices—Practices A, B, C, and D—how prevalent conformity to that practice is. The researchers grouped the corporations according to the total number of people each employs, including an equal number in each group. For each practice, the graph shows the conformity as the percent of corporations in each group that conform to the practice. For example, the graph shows that approximately 50% of the corporations with greater than 500 employees conform to Practice B.

Scanning the graph and reading the text, we see that the graph relates the percentage of corporations conforming to four practices, A, B, C, and D, to the number of employees at the corporations surveyed.

Select the options from the drop-down menus to complete the statement so that it most accurately reflects the information provided.

The graphic shows a strong positive correlation between conformity to Practice __________ and __________.

To correctly fill the blanks, we need to find two aspects of the graphic that show "a strong positive correlation." In other words, the two correct answers must name things shown on the graph that move up or down, or both, together.

For the first blank, we have the following choices:

Scanning the graph, we see that conformity to practice A is not correlated with anything since there's no other aspect of the graph that oscillates up and down along with conformity to practice A.

Similarly, nothing oscillates along with conformity to practice B, which goes up when conformity to A goes down and goes down when conformity to A goes up.

In contrast, conformity to practice C has a downtrend as number of employees increases that is closely paralleled by the trend of conformity to practice D.

So, the correct answers for the two blanks are C and conformity to practice D.

To confirm that conformity to practice D is correct for the second dropdown, we can also eliminate total number of employees by noting that nothing else trends up along with total number of employees, and we can eliminate number of corporations in the groups because the passage says that there are "an equal number in each group" and nothing else shown on the graph remains the same across the groups.

Correct answer: C, conformity to practice D
