Researchers recently found that people who bought passes to individual fitness classes showed up 99 percent of the time, while those bought a package of five passes in advance only showed up 25 percent of the time. One explanation is that the more aware a gym patron is about the cost of a pass, the more likely that patron is to use it.
Which of the following would, if true, best serve as an alternative explanation of the results of the study?
A. The price of each pass was slightly cheaper for those who bought all five passes ahead of time.
B. Many people who visit the gym don't continue to attend regularly for longer than three months.
C. Those who attended all five classes became eligible to win a gift certificate.
D. Most of the time, people who bought an individual pass did so immediately before each class they attended.
E. There is sometimes not enough equipment for people who arrive just before a fitness class begins.

Which of the following would, if true, best serve as an alternative explanation of the results of the study?
A. The price of each pass was slightly cheaper for those who bought all five passes ahead of time.
B. Many people who visit the gym don't continue to attend regularly for longer than three months.
C. The theater will probably be cleaner if snacks are banned completely than if patrons are only permitted to have one snack.
D. Patrons will not simply bring snacks from home if the snack bar is not installed in the lobby.
E. The theater's primary concern should be to maintain a clean environment.

I think something is wrong with this question. IMO D.

It is a question of find alternative explanation wherein the original explanation in the question for difference in attendance of gym is the more aware a gym patron is about the cost of a pass, the more likely that patron is to use it i.e - the more a patron feels the "pinch" for money spent the more likely he or she is to attend the gym.

A. The price of each pass was slightly cheaper for those who bought all five passes ahead of time. This strengthens the original explanation - people who bought bulk passes spent less and hence feel a smaller "pinch"
B. Many people who visit the gym don't continue to attend regularly for longer than three months. This is off topic but could be an alternative explanation as to why "all people"
stop attending the gym vs. different types of passes related attendance. So weak answer choice.

C. The theater will probably be cleaner if snacks are banned completely than if patrons are only permitted to have one snack. Unrelated to the question!
D. Patrons will not simply bring snacks from home if the snack bar is not installed in the lobby. Unrelated to the question!
E. The theater's primary concern should be to maintain a clean environment.Unrelated to the question!

--------------------------------------------------------- with edited options-------------------------------------------------------------

C. Those who attended all five classes became eligible to win a gift certificate. This weakens the argument - this should promote higher attendance among the multiple pass holders. Hence incorrect
D. Most of the time, people who bought an individual pass did so immediately before each class they attended. Perfect! Since single pass holders bought the pass with the intention to attend an immediate class - it works out. This is the correct option.
E. There is sometimes not enough equipment for people who arrive just before a fitness class begins. Irrelevant

Hence correct option is ? D.

Best,

Please give kudos if the explanation helped...

A. The price of each pass was slightly cheaper for those who bought all five passes ahead of time. 'Slightly cheaper" means not a big difference in "costs". Therefore, pain of losing money is not the case for less attendance. OUT

B. Many people who visit the gym don't continue to attend regularly for longer than three months. Time is Irrelevant

C. Those who attended all five classes became eligible to win a gift certificate. Out of scope

D. Most of the time, people who bought an individual pass did so immediately before each class they attended. Shows that people's pinch of buying individual passes is leading to attending more classes

E. There is sometimes not enough equipment for people who arrive just before a fitness class begins. Out of scope

this question is same as a question in OG 2016 instead of gym it was theater i remembered that and even same answer
IMO D
A:- slightly cheaper doesn't make lot of cost difference so eliminate
B:- Out of scope as they will continue or not doesn't matter
C:-Again out of scope this option doesn't show any impact on conclusion
D:- correct as If they purchase immediately before they know how much money they spend just now and this will finally conclude the same.
E:-out of scope.
