RESOLVE THE PARADOX MASTERBOOK
Core Rule: Every paradox is Fact A = True, Fact B = True, yet A and B seem inconsistent. The correct answer introduces a new Fact C that makes A and B coexist. The answer is almost never that Fact A is false or Fact B is false.
MASTER FAMILY 1 — ALTERNATIVE CAUSE
Structure: Expected cause missing OR expected effect missing.
Need: Another cause or a blocker.
Example 1: Lake pollution increased. Industrial discharge did not increase.
Prethink: Need another source of pollution.
Correct GMAT answers: Agricultural runoff increased substantially. Floodwaters carried pollutants into the lake. A newly discovered source contaminated the lake.
Wrong answers: Industrial discharge remained stable. The lake is large. The pollution was measured accurately.
Example 2: Advertising doubled. Sales unchanged.
Prethink: Need blocker.
Correct GMAT answers: A major competitor launched a superior product. Demand for the category declined sharply. The company experienced inventory shortages.
MASTER FAMILY 2 — HIDDEN DIFFERENCE
Structure: Same input, different outcome.
Need: Important difference.
Example: Two schools use the same curriculum. One performs much better.
Prethink: What differs?
Correct GMAT answers: One school's students receive tutoring. One school serves wealthier families. One school has more experienced teachers.
Wrong answers: Both schools use the same books. Both schools are public. Both schools are located in the same state.
MASTER FAMILY 3 — COMMON FACTOR
Structure: Different inputs, same outcome.
Need: Shared driver.
Example: One city spends much more on schools. Scores are identical.
Prethink: What dominates both?
Correct GMAT answers: Parental involvement strongly predicts achievement. State curriculum largely determines scores. Teacher quality is similar.
MASTER FAMILY 4 — SUBGROUP / COMPOSITION
Most important 700+ family.
Structure: Whole says one thing, parts say another.
Need: Hidden subgroup.
Example: Average income increased. Most workers earn less.
Prethink: Who is pulling the average up?
Correct GMAT answers: A small group received very large raises. Several high-income workers entered the workforce. Income gains were concentrated among executives.
Example: Average test score increased. No student improved.
Prethink: Did the population change?
Correct GMAT answers: Low-scoring students left school. New students entered with higher scores. Composition of the sample changed.
Example: National pollution increased. City pollution decreased.
Prethink: What happened elsewhere?
Correct GMAT answers: Other cities experienced large increases. Most emissions came from regions outside the city.
MASTER FAMILY 5 — SELECTION BIAS
Most commonly missed.
Structure: Group A performs better. Group A chose the treatment.
Need: People entering the group were already different.
Example: Seminar attendees perform better.
Prethink: Who chooses seminars?
Correct GMAT answers: High performers are more likely to attend. Attendance is voluntary. Motivated workers seek seminars.
Example: People who exercise use more medication.
Prethink: Direction reversed?
Correct GMAT answers: People with health problems are more likely to exercise. Doctors recommend exercise to patients.
Example: Older firms have higher success rates.
Prethink: Who disappeared?
Correct GMAT answers: Less successful firms typically fail early. Only stronger firms survive long enough to be counted.
MASTER FAMILY 6 — BASE RATE
Extremely common.
Structure: Rate versus Total.
Need: Denominator change.
Example: Defect rate fell. Defective units increased.
Prethink: Production volume?
Correct GMAT answers: Total production increased substantially. Output grew faster than quality improved.
Example: Sales increased. Market share fell.
Prethink: Market grew faster?
Correct GMAT answers: Industry sales increased even more rapidly. Competitors expanded faster.
Example: Fewer accidents. Insurance payouts higher.
Prethink: Severity increased?
Correct GMAT answers: Average accident became more severe. Claims per accident increased.
MASTER FAMILY 7 — MEASUREMENT
Dangerous because students miss it.
Structure: Statistic changes. Reality may not.
Need: Counting changed.
Example: Crime increased. Actual activity stable.
Prethink: Measurement changed?
Correct GMAT answers: Reporting requirements expanded. New tracking system adopted. Previously unreported incidents counted.
Example: Obesity rate increased.
Prethink: Definition changed?
Correct GMAT answers: Diagnostic criteria broadened. Threshold lowered. Definition expanded.
MASTER FAMILY 8 — TIMING
Structure: Cause now. Effect expected now. Effect appears later.
Need: Lag.
Example: Training increased. Performance unchanged.
Prethink: Too soon?
Correct GMAT answers: Benefits emerge after several months. Workers recently completed training. Program effects require time.
Example: Policy introduced. No improvement observed.
Prethink: Too early?
Correct GMAT answers: Implementation is incomplete. Benefits typically emerge after years.
MASTER FAMILY 9 — CONSTRAINT / BOTTLENECK
Favorite hard pattern.
Structure: More resources. Same output.
Need: Limiting factor.
Example: More machines. Output unchanged.
Prethink: What is the bottleneck?
Correct GMAT answers: Factory space remained limited. Raw materials were insufficient. Labor shortage persisted.
Example: More fertilizer. Yield unchanged.
Prethink: Ceiling reached?
Correct GMAT answers: Yield already near maximum. Soil quality became the limiting factor.
Example: Training doubled. Tiny productivity gain.
Prethink: Diminishing returns?
Correct GMAT answers: Most gains occur during initial training. Workers already mastered core skills.
MASTER FAMILY 10 — BEHAVIORAL RESPONSE
Harder 700+ pattern.
Structure: Improvement introduced. People adapt. Benefit disappears.
Need: Behavior changed.
Example: Fuel efficiency improved. Fuel use unchanged.
Prethink: What behavior offset the gain?
Correct GMAT answers: People drove more. Lower operating costs increased usage. Travel frequency increased.
Example: Bonuses increased. Productivity decreased.
Prethink: How did workers game the system?
Correct GMAT answers: Employees focused only on rewarded tasks. Workers ignored unrewarded responsibilities. Incentives created unintended behavior.
OPTION EVALUATION CHECKLIST
For every answer choice ask:
Does it connect BOTH facts?
Does it explain WHY both can be true?
Does it reduce the contradiction?
Is it genuinely NEW information?
If it explains only one side → Reject.
If it merely restates the stimulus → Reject.
If it makes the paradox worse → Reject.
20-SECOND PRETHINK SYSTEM
After reading the stimulus ask:
Alternative Cause?
Difference?
Subgroup?
Selection?
Base Rate?
Measurement?
Timing?
Constraint?
Behavioral Response?
One of these nine buckets solves almost every Resolve-the-Paradox question. High scorers do not memorize 30 patterns. They compress everything into these nine answer families and then scan answer choices looking for the family that resolves the contradiction.
