Shouldn't he have learned the importance of networking during MBA recruiting? I can't imagine even in good times that you can get a job out of HBS just by waiting for companies to "realize how great I am and call me out of the blue", or sending out resumes.

You would think that. Any chance they didn't teach that in mba programs 30+ years ago?
