I couldn't prepare for the GMAT and got score as 570. Almost with 8 year work exp in different parts of world in IT industry, education domain and non profit management. I am planning for one year MBA from some decent B-school in US. Should i emphasis on giving the GMAT again or try up with few b-schools ? I dont want to give GMAT again as i strongly feel that with my overall profile i can get into a good b-school. What are the good B-schools where i can apply with this score ? Please enlighten with your views.

Hello Jags1984,

A GMAT score of 570 will be too low for you to aim at decent MBA programs (top 70-80 in the US). You should definitely retake the test. In terms of your profile, you bring experience from the IT industry (an over-represented applicant pool), and have also worked in education and non-profits. The international experience will be helpful, but it is difficult to comment without really knowing more about your roles in these sectors. Even assuming, however, that you bring in solid achievements through your work profile, a GMAT score of 570 will still be too low.

Hey.. Thanks,
My profile in IT has been as a software developer, tester and IT business analyst. I worked as a module lead as well. On the other hand in education and non profit, i worked as a program leader and founder/director of the non profit respectively. What if i think of top 150-200 B-schools around the world ?? will i fit into the criteria ? moreover, i have read and heard many stories with people cracking good B-schools with low GMAT scores. Actually right now i am not in a position to prepare for the exam and want to take admission in 2015 beginning.

It really depends on what schools you are targeting and your profile. Some schools are more forgiving than others when it comes to the GMAT but typically you want to at a minimum fall into the middle 80% of scores. What schools are you considering?

Hi,

Well ! Your initiatives in the non-profit sector certainly will add value, but if you are keen on a TOP TEIR MBA program, a 570 will be a tough hurdle. Some schools have shown patterns of picking candidates with low GMAT score, but I will not bet on the outliers. Your nationality, Gender, Industry, Function, post MBA Goals, GPA: A lot of factors count.

With the new GMAT pattern, you can decide to accept your score after viewing it. I will strongly recommend going for another attempt. Preparing for GMAT will be lesser painful than spending 12 months to find employment with a really low level School. Not recommended.
