Hi all,
I took the GMAT for the first time on Saturday and scored a 750 (IR 6, Q46, V47). I am elated with my overall score. However, I'm afraid a Q46 will be seen as a major knock against my application to my top-choice school, Berkeley-Haas, which looks closely at the quant score. I have a social sciences degree from a top school (with some calculus classes and basic statistics, but not quant-heavy overall).
I have less than 2 months before deadlines and have not started my applications. I would appreciate if anyone could weigh in on the following options:
1) Sign up to re-take the exam in December and take an accelerated class in quant or hire a tutor. I only did self-study for 2 months before the first exam. Math does not come easy to me, but I am pretty confident I can improve the score if I invest the time and resources.
2) Be thankful for my 750, and focus all my energy now on writing the best essays I can over the remaining 7 weeks before the application deadline.
Finally, is this the type of question (worded more artfully/generally) that can be posed to admissions officers? I would love to get someone at Haas or MIT to give me their view on this (even if their response is vague/implicit) but I also don’t want to bug them with questions that are widely known to be inappropriate.

From your own words, it's best to not retake. You already scored HIGHER than you typically score in math. What are the chances that you will score even higher than that? You'd want to retake with a score over 700 is if you were scoring higher in practice tests (i.e. you typically score 50-51 in Quant, but somehow got a 46). If you normally don't even score a 46, then count your blessings and move on to other parts of your application. You are working with a tight deadline, and it doesn't make sense to retake. If you had several months to study, then it might be a different story.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I'm confident I could improve with some proper training, but time is short and getting to a 47 of 48 might not be worth the lost time on essays. And, of course, a score bump is not a sure thing (and a canceled score could look bad).
Any thoughts out there on feeling an admissions person out about this question?
