hi,
I Recently took the gmat and got 670 Q-49,v-31 I am planning in retaking it in a month I want to pass the 700 mark. In the exam I felt that I wasted my time in quant on few tough problems by zoning out and there were at least questions where after submitting the answer i understood the answer i selected was the wrong one, in the verbal section the starting few questions especially 2 sc questions seemed to be different i couldnt process them it took me a few questions to get going after which the questions seemed quite normal. The mock test marks i got before the test were
VERITAS KAPLAN-680(Q-49,V-33)
MANHATTAN and expert global there was a problem with my pc so i couldnt write them consistently(660,Q-49,v-31)
GMAT PREP 1-710(q-50,v-36)
GMAT PREP 2-680(q-49,v-33)(for some reason the test took only 30 responses in quant and 35 responses in verbal)
None of these exams were retakes or taken by resetting

I am planning on focusing more on tough quant and medium to hard verbal nut i have exhausted my gmat bundle a few questions are left in the og and i do not what i should prepare and from where?
any help will be appreciated.
THANK YOU!

riteeshreddy - It seems to me as if you could better spend your time, at least in the first two weeks, reviewing past errors and seeing whether a pattern develops in the types of problems you tend to miss, the types of incorrect answers you tend to choose. That is, if you keep hammering through questions, you will likely make the same sorts of mistakes over and over, and this will accomplish little in the way of progress. Once you have thoroughly examined your error log, you might want to take on small sets of new problems and exhaust that OG: 10, 15, 20 questions. If your accuracy has increased, and if you can get consistent results in these practice sets, then you will have made some genuine progress. Your Quant foundation seems to be in good shape. Perhaps there are a few areas that you need to shore up--e.g., combinatorics or advanced geometry--so you can feel as if you could reach into the 50s, but since you are knocking on the door already, I think it is more important to determine whether you are making mistakes on Easy or Medium questions that might be holding back your score.

Your Verbal scores, both in practice and on the official test, suggest that there are gaps in understanding, and that you are making a lot of mistakes. Do you find CR questions to be the most difficult? How about RC or SC questions? Again, you need to track your mistakes to see if you can pinpoint your specific weaknesses. If you cannot, then post some of your questions in this forum, and I am sure others would be happy to talk about them. You could also discuss questions with someone else you know who is studying for the test. Bouncing ideas off other people who are serious about the test should allow you to gain some valuable insight into what to do differently.

In short, I believe you have access to enough practice material already. If you can afford it, I would recommend springing for the next two official practice tests (3 & 4 or 5 & 6), perhaps taking the first after your two-week review of previous errors, saving the other for a week prior to your retake.

Good luck with your studies.

- Andrew
Thanks for replying andrew!
I find sc and rc to be difficult I mostly get around 80 percent of the og cr correct. When I do sc and Rc individually i have high accuracy but in the exams sometimes i just zone out.I have been maintaining an error log and i will review my mistakes again

Hi riteeshreddy,

First off, a 670/Q49 is a strong score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

There's certainly no harm in retesting though - and you certainly have the opportunity to pick up some significant points in the Verbal section. Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?

Goals:
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
4) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

You might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Hi riteeshreddy,

Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores. From what you describe, you studied for about 1 month (with a couple of weeks 'off' in between). As such, you might naturally continue to improve as you continue to study. That having been said, GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, your various CAT score results - along with your Official Score - show that you essentially performed the same each time (about 680 +/- a few points). You handle certain aspects of the GMAT consistently well, but you also make certain consistent mistakes. This is meant to say that you could potentially be able to hit your Goal Score right now, but you might also potentially be 'stuck' at this current level (just below 700+).

From what you describe, you have plenty of time before you plan to apply to those MiM Programs - which is good. By extension, you can approach this next phase of your studies however you choose. If you'd like to be efficient with your studies, then you would likely find it beneficial to invest in a Verbal Course of some type (either Guided Self-Study or instructor-led).

1) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Hi riteeshreddy,

670 is a very nice start, especially considering that you’ve studied for only 1.5 months. Also, since you are currently in undergrad, give yourself as much time as you need to improve your verbal skills, and take the GMAT when you are ready to do so.

Regarding how to move forward, since your previous study plan did not seem too focused or organized, this time around, consider following more of a structured and linear study plan that allows you to individually learn each GMAT verbal topic and practice each topic until you’ve gained mastery.

Certainly, if you’d like more specific advice on how to improve your verbal skills, feel free to reach out. You also may find it helpful to read this article about how to score a 700+ on the GMAT

Feel free to reach out with any questions. Good luck!
