I am trying to gather input on my dilemma of whether to apply R1 next season or R3 now. I am already 27 which means I am above average age. For this reason I am afraid to push things off. I know R3 is challenging. I am looking at top 5 programs. I wanted to apply earlier but my work schedule made it impossible. I feel that waiting will not put me in a better position in any way except the round. Ie I have hit a bit of a wall at work and don't see my candidacy getting any better. Would welcome any input. Thanks for any and all insights.
Are you afraid to push things off solely because of age? The average age of applicants at matriculation is about 28 so you're by no means deemed too old at this point.
R3 is very challenging and since it seems you're only interested in top 5, that makes it even more challenging. How do you think you compare against other applicants (GMAT, Prestige, Gender, GPA, etc.)? Remember the bar is set much higher for Round 3 since schools are more looking to round out their class with extraordinary individuals. Also, assuming most of your deadlines are in early April, have you done the research on your target schools? Do you think you have enough time to write stellar essays by the deadline? Can you do all of this while working? How much thought have you put into your post MBA goal?
It sort of sounds like you always thought of getting an MBA, but the desire ratcheted up a notch when you "hit the wall at work". If the desire to apply round 3 is purely reactionary, then I would advise to wait till the fall.
However, if you've done your research, assessed your candidacy objectively, and have the time to focus on those schools you have targeted, I would say go for it. Remember to put your best foot forward rather than just putting a foot forward.
Good luck!
