Salaries of Moon and Shanto are in the ratio of 4:5. If the salary of each is increased by $5000, the new ratio becomes 50:60. What is Shanto's present salary?
A) 20,000
B) 25,000
C) 30,000
D) 35,000
E) 40,000

We can create the equation:

(4x + 5000)/(5x + 5000) = 50/60

(4x + 5000)/(5x + 5000) = 5/6

6(4x + 5000) = 5(5x + 5000)

24x + 30000 = 25x + 25000

5,000 = x

Shanto’s present salary is 5,000 x 5 = 25,000.

Answer: B

Thanks for the explanation! Could you please advise why the value $5000 is plugged in to the original ratio (4:5) instead of the new ratio (5:6)?

Because $5,000 is added to the original ratio 4:5 and the resultant of that addition is 50:60 or 5:6 and NOT Vice Versa

You should be adding 5000 to 5:6 if question would have been framed something like this "Salaries of Moon and Shanto becomes 4:5 if the salary of each is increased by $5000 to the original ratio 50:60. What is Shanto's original salary?"

But that would be an awkward way of framing the question!

Hope i'm clear!
