A. 92
B. 98
C. 99
D. 100
E. 101

Sally has already taken 4 exams. she is going to sit for another one. So, total 5 exams.

she wants to keep an average of 90 in 5 exams.

Total score in 5 exams = 5* 90 = 450.

Total in 4 exams = 78 + 92 + 83 + 99 = 352

Difference = 450 - 352 = 98.

B is the correct answer.

lets the marks be x
by given condition,

(352+x)/5 = 90 ( new average)

which gives x= 98

352+x= 90 * 5
x = 98

We can let n = the score on the next test and create the equation:

(78 + 92 + 83 + 99 + n)/5 = 90

78 + 92 + 83 + 99 + n = 450

352 + n = 450

n = 98

Alternate Solution:

Let’s calculate the number of points away from 90 that each previous test is.

78 is 12 points below 90.

92 is 2 points above 90.

83 is 7 points below 90.

99 is 9 points above 90.

Her net amount is -12 + 2 - 7 + 9 = -8. Thus, she is 8 points below 90 for all 4 previous tests. Therefore, she must score 90 + 8 additional points (to make up the deficit), for a total score of 98 on the next test..

Answer: B
