Split 1:
'a' vs 'the' : 'a means' is correct because the sentence starts with 'SAS is a database' ; had it been 'SAS is the database ', we would have used 'the means'
- Changes the intended meaning: using 'a' means -it is one of the means- vs using 'the' - meaning it is the specific mean

Split 2:
'amount' vs 'number' : simple, 'number' is used for countable objects such as facts in this example vs 'amount' used for uncountable objects
