so guys I know that answer is either D or E.

How can you tell whether it's the event (asteroid hitting the earth) or the extinction of the animals/plants that marks the end of Cretaceous Period.

This was the difference of right and wrong for me and I don't know what strategy to use on exam when I face a question like this!! please help!

what marks the end of Cretaceous period?

D says "slamming"

E says "extinctions"

I say D is right. My answer is D.

I don't know.. what if some animals/plants go extinct today without the meteor, would we mark an end of period, or would we mark it only when one definite catastrophe occurs.

Meteor slamming the earth was a major event because of extinctions. If extinctions did nt happen after slamming, then we can hardly say that slamming marked the end of that period. The significance to slamming came because of extinctions. Hence extinctions could have marked the end of period.
