I am not sure what you mean by intake is singular. There are two issues here:
1. Derive "by" is wrong, and should be "derive from" - so you can eliminate answer choices A and D.
2. Taking even more uses a present continuous form and its preferable to use the simple form and hence you can eliminate C. Now between B and E, the subject of the fragment refers to the benefits, not the intake. So the sentence is:
"The benefits .... from further intake ... ARE negligible" since the benefits are negligible. You can't say the benefits is negligible. Hence the answer is B.
I don't really see where the question of singularity of the word intake comes from. Also, PLEASE POST THE SOURCE. Else your thread will be locked. Thank you.
That's not true. Intake means eating. It doesn't have to be plural. Benefits from intake is similar to saying, for example, disadvantages of growth. You don't say growths. It's plural benefits from a singular action and it's grammatically correct.
