Dear experts,
Doubt 1 below is an option in a famous GMATPrep CR passage, I request you to advise how the word None is used
(C)
None of the shipments sent by Comcorp by Truax Construction last
week was specially ordered.
its clear here that the Subject is None and Verb - Was
And since its an official question, I presume it should be correct, unless someone made a typing mistake.
I have learnt from a prep company that when we use None, we assign singular or plural verb based on the item in the context(singular or plural). however, here we have shipments but still a singluar "was".
Doubt 2 :
Usage of each - Each is always singular, right? Eg : Each of the boys in the class has secured more than 75%.
Thanks a lot for answering.
Hi
GMATaxe001,
1. The rule you found is just
one way of looking at
none. Unfortunately, there is no consensus to be found here, so I ask my students to delay taking a call on
none (and try to work with other splits).
1a. Some people think that
none of + [plural noun] should be considered singular because "none" ~ "no one".
1b. Others think it should be plural because "none" ~ "not any".
1c. And... some people think both are fine.
So far as I remember, (1a) is the "traditional" view, whereas (1b) and (1c) are more modern ways of using that structure. For what it's worth, I like (1c). However, if a question forced us to choose, I would go
singular.
2.
Each can also be used after a plural subject. In such cases, the verb remains
plural.
2a.
The boys each have a question.
