Well, in that case probably because a mammal's is shorter than that of a mammal. After all a mammal's does refer to mammal's eye.

Let's discuss...

********************************
Because fish look through water, their eyes are very different from a mammal.

A. from a mammal
B. from a mammal’s
C. from that of a mammal
D. than that of a mammal
E. than is a mammal’s.

is there a typo?

the question should be: "Because fishes look through water, their eyes are very different from a mammal".

then only B makes sense otherwise its a bad question.

OK - there's no such thing as FISHES. The plural of Fish is Fish.

seems you correct. sorry for ignorance. thankx for bringhing it up to the forum.

may be fish is correct in gmat but i have seen this sentence.

"The marine fishes reach their greatest diversity in the coral reef ecosystems. Increasing polution, urban development, mining activities, deforestation and destructive fishing are endangering the coral reef and its fish diversity."

'different from' is the correct idiom.
Eyes of fishes are diff. from 'those' not 'that' since eyes is plural form.

B is the answer.

'different from' is a right idiom, so, D and E are out.

Only C compares eyes of fish to that of a mammal!
