The difference between B and E has to do with the continuity of an action. The original sentence tries to state that "Thomas's style and choices of subject" WERE disturbing (past tense, they are NOT disturbing anymore!), whereas the answer choice E changes the meaning saying that "Thomas;s style and choices of subject" will continue to be disturbing. Any time you are faced with 2 answers that seem to be grammatically correct, ALWAYS refer to the original sentence to check whether one of the answers is changing its meaning!
