E

I think A,B and D are out because of "that of" and "those of".....
"distinguishing their species from others" or
"distinguishing their species from those of others"... what does "those of" is referring to????

Out of C and E, I prefer E because of
1. "assisting in" is correct idiom
2. "being able to distinguish" is wordy in C.

Will go with E.
Comparison is checked here.

A and B incorrectly compares mates.
D - hydrocarbons don't assist in tasting.

IMO, D..

b/w "assisting flies to" and "assisting flies that"

I think "assisting flies that" distorts the meaning.

E.

"Hydrocarbons" is plural requires "assist".

Other than D and E (which use assisting) others are incorrect.

D has "assisting flies to taste" ... hydrocarbons dont assist flies to taste; hydrocarbons assists in flies that can taste.

Therefore, E.

Good catch .. "those " is trying to refer to species.. But note that "species" is singular.. :)
