Yup D for me too.
A, B are out as what is "this" referring to?
C is bad because which seems to refer to courtship
down to D and E
Pick D because of assist to and distinguish own species from those of others is correct

E seems better to me.
Comparing D and E:
"Assisting" whom?
"flies that taste the hydrocarbons" or "flies to taste the hydrocarbons"?
I find "own species from others" better than "own species from those of others"
If we say "own species from those of others" is better, then it sounds like "species of species".
What do u say guys? please correct me.
