Of the two which is the correct version

A: The Senator from Texas, as well as many democratic lawmakers, support gay marriage.

B: The Senator from Texas, as well as many democratic lawmakers, supports gay marriage.

In my opinion it should be B, since the subject is the senator (singular )

Subject here is “Senator” it’s a singular subject. So, B is correct. I’d say check the concept of compound subject, that’ll help you distinguish between different verb that should be followed.

Hi Ajeez,

You are correct.
The Senator is singular and hence the verb should be singular.

When we have additives in the sentence, we have to look for the main subject in the sentence and make the verb agree with the main subject.
"as well as" is an additive.

Other additives are—along with, in addition to, accompanied by, together with, including, etc.
