Of the two which is the correct version

A: The Senator from Texas, as well as many democratic lawmakers, support gay marriage.

B: The Senator from Texas, as well as many democratic lawmakers, supports gay marriage.

In my opinion it should be B, since the subject is the senator (singular )

Hi Ajeez,

You are correct.
The Senator is singular and hence the verb should be singular.

When we have additives in the sentence, we have to look for the main subject in the sentence and make the verb agree with the main subject.
"as well as" is an additive.

Other additives are—along with, in addition to, accompanied by, together with, including, etc.

At Crackverbal team,

Can you please change it in the grammar booklet, this appears in Page 7

For example –Susan, along with her friends, plans to visit India. (the subject is Susan)
The Senator from Texas, as well as many democratic lawmakers, support gay marriage. (the subject is the Senator from Texas)
