I dont like A/B/C because they give me the impression that Henri and Pablo were art dealers, when infact they were remarkable painters.
D changes art dealers to 'art collectors'.. I think they mean two very different things.
E is passive. Then, it also seems to potray that 'are dealers' were marketing only 'artistic rivals' and not painters who were remarkable.
My understanding of this sentence is that- These two painters were artistic rivals, but very remarkable . They were the favorites of art dealers...
I dont find any of the sentences portraying this meaning.... D is better than the others as far as the meaning is concerned.
I'll go with D
A, B and C imply that Matisse and Picasso were among art dealers. Wrong; Matisso and Picasso were artists, not art dealers
E sounds as if Matisse and Picasso belonged to art dealers??
D, although wordier, properly sets Matisse and Picasso apart from art collectors (or dealers because the problem does not lie in how we call those dealers/collectors) and says that those artists were marketable in their living time.
