Sentence-
while serving six years sentence imposed by the British colonial government in India, a through review of Bhagbad Gita was completed by Tilak in 1910 and thereby learned the possible paths to liberation with emphasis on Karma yoga.

Doubt-
I understand the error on this statement but I want to know why grammatically 'review' is the subject of 'learned' on the above statement. Can someone please explain?

This is a passive voice construction. In passive voice, subject is acted upon. Here "review" is acted upon by Tilak. So, subject is review.

However, in original format, subject review cannot have verb "Learned". Subject Tilak has to have the verb learned.

Tilak completed a thorough review of Bhagvad Gita and learned the possible paths to liberation with emphasis on karma yoga.

Hope you understand
