d. for survival
e. for firms' survival

I can not understand which one is the correct answer choice.. according to me.. the correct answer choice should have been c... but its actually b.. So I am dead confused.. because I can not understand why

it is important to mention from whom the research and development expenditures is required to make the sentence grammaticallty correct.

The main point here is "such firms", so we need to mention firms a noun. hence B should be the answer

If you see the last part of the sentence "such firms tend to be very large" we understand that we are talking about some "firms" but it is nowhere mentioned in the sentence. Meaning, there is no subject in the main part(clause) of the sentence.

That is why we have to include a choice which mentions the word "firms" explicitly. I am not sure how to eliminate E. Maybe it is awkward to use "required for firms' survival"

correct idiom is

require + thing/person + infinitive

hence it should be require to
and NOT for
