D is the OA but I am not sure about the semicolon there. Any advice. I read that is should come when the two clauses are independent. The second clause here has a pronoun which makes it dependent. I guess.

the pronoun "it" is a substitute for the former sentence's subject "molybdenum". You obviously need a subject in the second sentence as well and the use of a pronoun is fine.
