243.Scientist exploring the eastern coast of Florida to North Carolina, an area known as the South Atlantic Bight, have come across a sponge, one that they believe is a type previously unknown to science.

A. that they believe is
B. that they believe it to be
C. they believe that it is of
D. they believe that is
E. they believe to be of

Can someone verify why B is wrong? Is it because of "it" being ambigious?

Here "that" acts as a linking conjuction.

Idiom = beleive to be. So that eliminates everything except B and E

IC #1 = Scientist exploring the eastern coast of Florida to North Carolina, an area known as the South Atlantic Bight, have come across a sponge

IC #2 = They believe it to be a type previously uknown to science.

B: IC1 linkingconjuction that IC2

E: IC1, DC. DC = One they believe to be of a type previously uknown to science.

One = pronoun for Sponge.

I don't think so, it should act as relative pronoun that is the object of the dependent clause, so you can't use "IT", thus having 2 objects in 1 clause.
Hope it helps!

Arch [or anyone else], could you parse the "IC" in AC "B" further.

Why do you say "that" is used as a relative pronoun. If so, what noun is it replacing? And what are the 2 objects in the Clause.

Is this some kind of rule? To not have 2 objects for a clause? Doesnt sound correct.

E.g: I eat seafood and icecream.

I = subject.
eat = verb
object #1 = seafood
object #2 = icecream.

Granted the object could be a compound subject but still......
