I want to apply for the third wave of INSEAD admissions,

May want to check the current info on the INSEAD website. All the best if you decide to retake. Could be worth working with a study buddy who is strong on Quant. You could teach them Verbal in exchange.

Hi swallowsbreath,

It seems a though you could get another 20+ points by improving verbal in a retake. Is there a way to apply with your current score now and then send an updated score after you have submitted your application?

Hi everyone, writing because I could use some advice.

Late last year I spent two weeks preparing for the GMAT before sitting for the exam. I scored 700 total, with a 39Q and 47V. Considering that the last time I had touched a math textbook was over ten years ago, in high school, I was pleasantly surprised by the result -- but several knowledgeable folks here told me that the low quant score would probably sink my application.

Yesterday I gave the test another go. Once again, my study schedule was two weeks. I thought I had improved significantly as a test-taker, but my overall score stayed exactly the same. I got a 700 total, with a 42Q and a 44V.

(I should also mention here that my verbal score declined partly because of a stupid mistake -- I forgot that during the online test you're supposed to use 4 minutes of your break to show the proctor your whiteboard, work area, and room. I clicked the "End Break" button too quickly and that inspection time had to be carved out of my verbal section. I ended up having to rush on a number of questions.)

So, I guess what I'm asking is -- well, is 42Q / 44V a balanced enough GMAT score to plausibly use for applications to top business schools? Or should I attempt the test again?

One additional consideration: I want to apply for the third wave of INSEAD admissions, for which the deadline is June 24th. I know the odds of a successful third wave admission are slim, but I would like to try anyway. That significantly limits the window for another attempt. Unless I use the current score for INSEAD and then reattempt the test for first wave applications in September.

If you are looking at INSEAD, the Q42 will hurt you. Your verbal scores are already excellent, so why not retake and try to get a higher Quant? Q45V45, for example, will get you to 730. Do that and look at the September intake.

Hi all, apologies for replying so late. I took the advice in this thread to heart and decided to attempt the GMAT again. My test was yesterday. I scored 720 overall, but sadly my quant didn't improve (the breakup was Q42 / V47). This is undeniably disappointing -- on the third and fourth official practice tests I scored 760 (Q47 / V48) and 730 (Q47 / V44) respectively. In the actual exam I ran out of time for the final three quant questions, something that's never happened to me before.

I'm at a bit of a loss for what to do. At this point I've exhausted the entirety of the Official Guide and most of the Quant Review. I've also used up the first four practice tests. The only other material I've relied on is the Manhatten All of the Quant book and GMAT Ninja's videos. Is it worth it to attempt the test again?

If you're applying in September, you have some flexibility. Perhaps take a couple of days to think over it. Writing a profile-review to get a sense how your application may stand with your current score could be helpful as well.

Some Quant tips if you decide to retake. Consider getting the ESR, too. If you share it here (after wiping any personal info), people may provide some specific suggestions.

Hi swallowsbreath

Good job in reattempting. You seem to have fallen short not due to a lack of concepts but due to inadequate time management. This is about test strategy and practice. Would certainly recommend that you reattempt the test once more.

Hi all, I've decided to take the test again. I figure why not, you know? Especially if a higher score is just within reach.

I do, however, have one major concern that you all may be able to help me with: as I mentioned earlier, I've exhausted the entirety of the official 2020 GMAT guide and much of the quant review -- what material should I use to maintain (and possibly improve) my quant skills between now and the exam? I've heard that one should be wary of relying too heavily on unofficial questions, but it doesn't seem like I have much choice.
