Hi Studious1,

Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so you might end up needing more study time than you have currently planned for. Since you've been focused on your Verbal skills for the last couple of weeks, it would help to see how well you are progressing. As such, I suggest that you take a new FULL-LENGTH CAT this weekend and make sure to take it in a realistic fashion (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, take it away from your home, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, etc.). Once you have that score, you should report back here and we can discuss the results.

As an aside, many Test Takers who use a 'book heavy' study approach end up getting 'stuck' at a particular score level. Your Score Goal is above the 90th percentile (so it will be a challenging goal regardless of how you choose to study) - and while it's too early to know whether you will get stuck or not - you might end up needing to invest in some new, non-book resources.

1) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

1) September - November time fram.
2) IESE and ESADE

I have no issue pushing my studies in through September/October if need be to get my score to where I want. As for taking a new CAT this weekend - I have only gained comfort with RC - i still do not have a gauge on CR and SC. Is the CAT good to take only feeling comfortable with one new skill?

Hi Studious1,

Taking FULL-LENGTH CATs at regular intervals - and under realistic conditions - is an essential part of the study process. From your original post, you took that 1st CAT with no preparation whatsoever. Now that you have a better sense of what it 'feels like' to take the Exam - and you've worked on RC, CR and a little SC, there's a certain logic to seeing how well you have learned during that time and whether you are able to use that knowledge under timed conditions to score higher. You seem to be more comfortable with RC - if you truly are, then that should help you in a number of different areas in BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. If you'd rather push back that next CAT, then that's fine, but you shouldn't push it back that far.

I completed the CAT as suggested today and my RC correction rate jumped from 21% correct on test 1 to 61% correct on test 2. It was right in line with my correct rate in my book practice - still struggling with the detail/application questions while global and inference questions I am strong with.

My overall score dropped from 500 to 460. I finished all of the sections this time, but my CR and SC sections took a significant dive (haven't done enough SC practice and CR I need to start using the other book I purchased). One benefit here was that I did not feel rushed in the verbal section like last time - I Was able to comfortably read the passages. I may have been tired from last night since I was up late so that may have played into the score drop.

Math concepts haven't been touched however once I review the basic concepts I'm sure I can improve this score quickly.

Hi Studious1,

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, your 2 CAT score results show that you essentially performed the same each time (about 480 +/- a few points). Your improved performance in RC is a good sign though, so you should proceed with your studies however you choose and you should plan to take a NEW, FULL-LENGTH CAT in 2-3 weeks.
