Hi Malekitt,

Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so the fact that you've been studying for just 1.5 months (and inconsistently) means that you would likely improve if you just had more time (and if you put in more consistent effort).

One of the key elements to performing at a high level is the process of consistent and proper note-taking (it helps in IR, Quant and Verbal), so if you're skimming and/or trying to do work 'in your head', then that's a big part of why your RC scores are not improving. With 5 days before your Official GMAT, you probably can't master RC overall, but you can certainly hone some of your skills a bit.

1) What are the exact application deadlines for the Schools that you're interested in?

Hi Rich,

thank you very much for your kind responses!
I just finished my fourth mock exam on GMATprep and tried to take at least a few notes for RC.
I wrote down for the three passages I encountered:

1. Passage
- 2 claims/status quo
- ex, prob, sol

2. Passage
- need, prob, sol

3. Passage
- theo
- ex/cons

and made it at least to a RC 34. Is this a promising way to take notes? Would you recommend to outline facts/details?

Altogether, this exam was the best I have done yet. I scored 730 (Q49, V40, IR8) with the following subscores:
PS 50 (3/21 incorrect)
DS 49 (3/16)

CR 51 (0/11)
RC 34 (3/13)
SC 38 (4/17)

I wonder, especially regarding RC, why this subscore is that low with only 3 wrong? Can you tell me?

To answer your question, the first deadline is the 15th January for my first-choice SSE. I take my last two mock exams on Saturday and Sunday morning to confirm my today's score. As you recommend me to do, I will check my mistakes in the evening and evaulate why I did the corresponding exercises wrong.

Do you have any other insights or recommendations for me?

Cheers!

Hi Malekitt,

Since you've now taken 2 CATs in the last 3 days, my first suggestion is that you stop taking CATs - there's no additional benefit at this point (since you're so close to Test Day) and you run the risk of 'burn out' before the Exam. From what you've experienced here, you can see that there's a benefit in taking some basic notes every time you work through an RC passage - you can decide how much work you should do here (but writing down all of the little details is NOT necessary when working on RC). Getting some extra RC practice in these last few days is fine, but you should not try to do too much (so no more CATs and no "cramming"); you would be better served by doing some light review and getting some extra rest so that you can go into Test Day clear-headed and ready to work.

Hi Rich,

unfortunately I am going to retake the GMAT. I did not perform well in the Verbal part and would like to improve my abilities in the next three weeks.
I look forward to retaking the exam on the 13th of January. My score on Tuesday was 640 (Q48, V29, IR5).
So far, I figured out some problems I had on the test day:

- bad sleep
- bad usage of the stationery by me (especially in the Verbal part when I did not write for several minutes the pens dried and I repeatedly needed to scribble until I could write again and e.g. eliminate SC options)
- the monitor size; I have always exercised on my 13 inch ultrabook und found it very different to read on a 26 inch monitor at the test center when sitting 30 cm in front of it. In fact, I always needed to change my position in front of the screen from laying back, e.g. to get an overview of some SC splits, to moving forward and writing close to the screen, e.g. to cross off some SC options

In summary, I am going to exercise in front of a larger screen until my retake and to improve especially my SC and RC skills. What do you recommend me to use the next 21 days efficiently? I've got two GMATprep exams left. When I did mock exams I always did them under the real exam's circumstances.

Cheers!

Hi Malekitt,

First off, a 640/Q48 is a strong score (it's right around the 80th percentile overall), so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. You would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of them here:

ask-admission-consultants-124/

With a V29, you would have lost some serious points in at least 2 of the 3 major Verbal categories (SC, RC and CR) and you likely lost a few questions in Quant due to little mistakes (such as doing work 'in your head' and not taking enough notes). With an additional 3 weeks of practice time, you could conceivably make some big improvements to your overall performance, but you'll have to learn/practice some new Tactics and make some adjustments to how you 'see' (and respond to) the Test.

Given everything that you've described, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Verbal Score Booster to be quite helpful. Most of our clients finish that Study Plan in under a month, so it should fit your timeframe. During that time, you'll also be able to access any of the Quant resources that interest you. We have a variety of free resources on our site (www.empowergmat.com), so you can 'test out' the Course before setting up an account.

Hello guys, hello Rich,

today I had my second official GMAT exam. I am glad to present my sweet score of 720 (IR7, Q49, V38).
As one can see, it is possible to recover from setbacks like my first try on the GMAT.

Probably my result could have been better if I behaved more disciplined and studied more structured during the last weeks.
Anyway, I am quite satisfied and would like to give you my personal takeaway if you read till here:

Manage your time wisely during the test. Two things seem to be true about the test:
1. GMAT is not necessarily about answering every question correct.
2. At the same time GMAT will reward you if you manage to answer many questions in a row correctly.
Consider this and know your opportunity costs when you decide on either spending 2,5+ minutes on a single question or guessing intelligently.

Thank you gmatclub for providing great resources.

Cheers!

Hi Malekitt,

This 720/Q49 is an outstanding score and a considerable improvement over your prior performance. (it's right around the 80th percentile overall). It certainly sounds like you analyzed your prior effort and made the necessary adjustment to pick up those missing points. Now you just have to make sure that you nail your applications.

1) Are you applying to any other Schools besides SSE?
