Scott and Katie leave Scott's house at 2:00 p.m. She walks toward the park at a rate of 3 miles per hour. 30 minutes later, Scott realizes she has forgotten something and runs after her at a rate of 5 miles per hour. How far has katie traveled before Scott catches up to her?

I have a question: where is Scott moving? In the opposit direction, staying near his home or south or north of Katie's path?... I can't find the answer from the information in the Q.

Original: "Scott and Katie leave Scott's house at 2:00 p.m. She walks toward the park at a rate of 3 miles per hour. 30 minutes later, Scott realizes she has forgotten something and runs after her at a rate of 5 miles per hour. How far has katie traveled before Scott catches up to her?"

How can you determine this unless you know the speed of Scott ??

I got:

1,5 km Katia will travel it 30 min.
1.5 + 3*x = 5*x
x = 0.75
5*x = 3.75

Is the answer 3.75 km?

Think Ive seen this one before. So I assume that they both don't leave the house at the same time.

Use d=rt

Scott: d=5t
Katie: d=3(t+1/2) 30min=1/2hr

make equations equal to each other.

5t=3t+3/2--> 2t=3/2--> t=3/4

Plug in for Katie

d=3(3/4+1/2) --> 15/4mi aprox 4mi (just know it is less than 4mi).

if u wanna calculate it all the way out 3.75mi

Think Ive seen this one before. So I assume that they both don't leave the house at the same time.

3.75 km. ran Scott. poor :(

Sk=(t+1/2)*3
Ss=t*5
Ss=Sk

(t+1/2)*3=t*5

t=0.75 hours

Sk=3.75
