Alright, people this post is way too sensitive so for legal reasons, I am putting the word allegedly in the subject itself so that I don't have to say it over and over again.
Another disclaimer- ADULT CONTENT IN THE TRAILER VIDEO AND LINKS.
This is from a true story. I rose to the ranks of the anti-ragging committee only to find out the most organised form of ragging that shamed my university.
When I decided to enrol in IIT during the Undergrad, I was told that the IITs do not have an option to live off campus. There is a fees to live on campus and apparently IITs have enough power to dictate- as if you leave, someone else is there to take it. Put a pin in that because you'll see soon.
Now, a little known fact about the Indian culture in government Universities, at least to foreigners, is that the system is quite corrupted. The system is- well to put it mildly- SM culture. Whats's SM? - Slave Master.
Seriously?
Well, let's analyse, shall we?
So, basic requirement is to consider that your senior is your "BAAP"- Translation (Father- in derogatory language). That concept came from another that your father does you mother. So basically, they would call themselves- "Baap" of you to exert dominance.
Oh that's all? Am I over reacting?
I'm just easing you in.
So, the designation you must use to address them is- "Sir". If you don't call them sir, I'll tell you what they'd do soon. Just let's get the facts straight first. So basically the logic behind that was to say that you are their servant, and they are your "Masters". A little offensive given that this was the reason for the national shame of a particular country, yes you guessed it.
So these are the basic rules of nomenclature.
Now the code of conduct-
1. You must never look them in the eye.
2. You must never talk to them in public places
3. You must acknowledge their presence by greeting them "Good morning sir" or any other.
4. You must get up and leave your seat immediately upon their arrival.
5. For a senior per year, you must add a designation- "Shri" or "Mr.". For example, if it is a second year student, you must acknowledge them by getting up nodding your head down as if you were ashamed, and say "Good Morning shri shri "X" sir"
Getting a bit dark? Not yet. Still easing you in.
Now, your tasks are assigned to you each night. The task involves doing something bad to someone you know in your year. You must damage something precious to them and then come back and get hit with a "Slap" by the senior who allotted you the task so that this senior will keep a record of your no. of slaps that signifies your rank in the community- the higher the slaps- the higher your rank will be. The number of slaps and the number of tasks need not be the exact same. IF 7 seniors decide to give you one task, you must have a slap from each senior. Each slap must be powerful enough to make a person bleed otherwise it won't count. The record was kept in an excel sheet that could be falsified at anytime by any senior.
But, wait- Why would people submit to such a culture? - Just wait you'll know.
The social construct of the oppressed to not speak up with proof, gave the oppressor authority to do as please.
There is a concept in psychology where a professor did an experiment by putting in a group of esteemed students in a setting that would allow them to exercise control with no consequences and it became the one of the most unethical experiment in the history of the world - "STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT". Click on the link below to know more
STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENTHere's a trailer for the movie made out of it-
TRAILERWhy am I making you watch it? Just watch it because the next thing will amaze you.
Stanford prison experiment became so dangerous that the people who wanted to exert authority would strip the submissive naked and beat them with anything that would come in hand, to the point for deep psychological damage.
HMM. Alright, now we are there.
So, when things got intense, the students opposed the oppression in the university, only to find out that their opposition invited a lot more than slaps. This time the student would be invited to a place outside University premises to "Talk" and would face issues that are not limited to just tearing the clothes off and putting some objects inside him to shame him and silence him.
That is all?
Oh no no no wait!
So, now they would just out of the blues exert dominance on just anyone.
In Psychology, there are studies that indicate that when you put even the most competent person into a situation such as this, the law of conformity will make him that way- either submissive if he is being oppressed or dominant if he is being the oppressor.
When I went to my college hostel, I was sure that I would face that but things that these people's parent's said changed my mind to join hostel- "He will become a man", said a guy's father when I eavesdropped.
Well, the abuses increased to a degree that a guy had cigarette burns on him that he claimed were accidently there because he dropped off the cigarette.
The seniors forced people to engage in things that they otherwise wouldn't pursue. Forceful sexual domination, burning their bodies with ashes and alcohol "chug" was just one of the few actions that went unnoticed.
Stanford prison experiment turned ugly in 2 days and people suffered sever psychological trauma. Imagine what the students in my university must have felt when they went through an experience that lasted for one year and then 2 more years under dominance- when they did this to others thinking that if we suffered, we will make others suffer as well. People who had no role in their mishap.
I came to the role of the one of six student members of the Antiragging committee that was no prize even on the exclusive seat. People were extremely dismissive of the ideas and opinions of the students by claiming, "They will learn respect". Alright, as an avid learner of psychology and as a human who knows the end result of Stanford prison, THAT IS THE DUMBEST THING I HAVE HEARD.
A case came in where the student claimed that his health is getting bad by the day with such acts on him and he was willing to give up.
Guess the verdict of the committee- "We have zero tolerance for such acts and such people will not participate in any college events activity. We will put them for psychological valuation"
Shocked?
In a country, where the punishment of rape is life imprisonmen even death sentence- this verdict was literally an embarrassment. The things that these hostelites went through was no less. Worse even.
These unhealthy adults are what the world will see in global market soon. These people who should rather be sitting in jail so that the world can have a better future, would rather be the decision makers of some companies.
The screams that went unnoticed behind those hostel walls remain oppressed to this day and I am ashamed to say that even though we reduced the cases of ragging in the community, I am the one to blame to not have done anything about it more. I wish I could change the world but the thing is I am alone. If I oppose them, the social construct gives them the advantage to not even face a lawsuit. The environment that these people created and are making them stay- I did oppose that.
There was a strategic ruling that the university will make hostels mandatory and I said, if you do that the others who have the freedom to live will be traumatized for life. At least to that degree I prevented a capitalist mind from destroying thousands of lives. Told you to put a pin in that, remember?
You think that men don't face issues?
You think that men don't have challenges?
You think that this is not equal to or worse than rape?
Think again!
I am ashamed to have been part of a construct that allowed this. So ashamed!
On a worse note- Bollywood movies rather show this in a comedic way, for example this video-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVingF_4Z28Slow claps for everyone who lacks empathy to this degree and is applying to a business school.
For shame!
I would even go as far as to say that world would be a better place if they ceased to exist tomorrow.
