I will be heading to B school in about two years and leaving behind 8 years as a Navy SEAL. Couple combat tours and I am confident that my experience will help me. I have heard a lot about Special Forces guys heading to B school so I am wondering if Admissions Offices at the top schools are desensitized to it? On one hand, I hear we are considered like any other vet transitioning and on the other, I have heard they will overlook a average GMAT score (650 even) to get a SEAL within the student body.
I'll be looking at HBS, Tuck, Darden, Kellogg. Does anyone know the real deal?? Thanks
i am a current first year at Wharton, I would say military competition for top MBA programs is getting fierce. they only have so many openings for vets and applications are increasing, especially as military networks on Wall Street and at top consulting forms continue to grow stronger
i agree with the previous advice, definitely work on all your essays, interview skills, and GMAT a bit.
all that being said i think as a SEAL you have a tremendous value proposition. we have 3 SEALs in our Wharton class and 42 vets overall in our class. This includes South Korean, IDF, and US vets as well as as few individuals from some other countries [those three i mentioned are the most highly represented but in no way better than any other vet].
we have an enlisted SEAL in my cohort here with 20 yrs of service, he could be an invaluable resource, PM me if you want to talk to SEALs you may not already know.
a trend working in your favor ought to be the increase in representation in combat heavy veterans[infantry, armor, rangers, marines, SEALs] and away from the technical veterans [fighter pilots, nuclear sub officers, engineers, logisitics]; i feel i benefitted from this trend
please send me any questions and consider adding wharton, we have an amazing vets network
