Hi there,

Yes, I agree some schools have mentioned Average GRE scores but I believe they are kinda deceptive because they are averaged across all the departments (including quant intensive depts like Accounting, Finance, Economics, Info Systems and Operations management). I believe most of these candidates applying for quant intensive programs have very high quant scores and thus, high overall GRE/GMAT scores. But does that mean adcoms also look for high test scores for Management and OB students? For example, Uni of Minnesota mentions their average GRE as 315 for their OBHR students, Uni of Arizona and Uni of Miami mention 311.

So I am really not sure as to whether ad coms are flexible when it comes to test scores or they have a hard cut off and if one does not meet that they won't even look at/review other aspects of the application.

Hello LiamOBHR

First of all, usually there is no hard cut off, especially if there is not clearly stated specific minimum score, or sentence like "applicants who don't score above desired score don't have chance of admission", something I saw few times here and there.

Second, they evaluate your profile holistically, meaning GRE/GMAT is just one part of application, if they like you overall, they can neglect some "weakness".

Third, those scores provided are just historical data, yes they are good ballpark what they expect to see every year, but outliers do happen from time to time, meaning you will be compared to other peers/applicants, in another words everything depends on strength of applicant pool that particular admission year, at chosen university.

I hope you realize that.

Finally, GRE/GMAT scores I provided you are for PhD in Management and OB programs only at mentioned schools (except for Minnesota), so they are not deceptive.

Yes, if you look at overall scores across all PhD programs at any given business school they will be inflated in quant, compared to what you probably need.

Finance and Operation Research PhD students will be the culprits :)

Hope it helps ! :geek:

Test Scores (GMAT/GRE): V168 Q163 (AWA scores still awaited)

Undegrad GPA: 3.95/4
Graduate GPA: 3.76/4

Research Experience: Working as an RA at Indian Institute of Management, Udaipur (One of India's top b-school) for one year. Learned advanced Statistics and Stata during my time here. Paper selected for presentation in January 2020 in one of India's top management conferences. Another paper selected for poster presentation at top Indian conference. Currently trying to send a paper to the Academy of Management Conference (but this would be after the application deadline)

Teaching Experience: None
Work Experience: 2 years with Deloitte Audit

Concentration Applying to: OB HR
Number of programs planned to apply to: at least 10
Dream Schools: INSEAD, Columbia, NYU

What made you want to pursue a PhD: my desire to pursue research in the area of cross-cultural management. I have several ideas and want to conduct research on them but have a lot of difficulty in doing so due to the lack of resources and expertise.

Concerns you have about your profile: No teaching experience.

Any additional specific questions you may have: How specific should I be in talking about my research interests? I am interested in cross-cultural management but still there are many things which can be explored in this area. I am writing my SOP and don't know how specific I need to be. I have heard that being too specific can also act against you as the admissions committee might think that you are too fixated on one thing and might not want to explore other areas if need be.

Thank you in advance for your help! :)
