I've already signed up my immediate supervisor to write me a recommendation. Selecting someone to write the second recommendation has been problematic. I have several choices.

1) A successful Stern graduate who is currently in the field I'm targetting post MBA. I've known him in a personal/professional capacity for about 2 years and he has served as a mentor to me.

2) My mentor/colleague at work. He is 40+ and an excellent writer but does not have an MBA. He has known me for about 2 years and we are close. He would have been my top choice but I think he'd say the same things that my immediate supervisor would.

3) A professor at my first choice university. I've known him for about 1 year and he serves as an advisor to the non-profit that I'm an officer of.

4) A client from my past entrepreneurial experience. Known him for several years, but I haven't been in touch for over 4 years.

Any ideas? Any suggestions are welcome.

I would pick the person who knows me best and has good writing skills. 2 sounds perfect. A coherent story from both of your recommenders would be feature not an issue..IMHO.

Well, #2 was my top choice until I started thinking about what I really wanted to do. Doesn't it make sense to have someone who is in your target field and knows you well enough to write the recommendation?

One concern of all admission committees is whether the candidate will be good enough at networking and soft skills to find employment after graduation. If I am interested in Venture Capital for example, doesn't it make sense to get a Venture Capitalist to write recommendations? Ofcourse, it wouldn't make sense to do this if that person does not know you well enough.

One of my recs asked me if he should put everything top 1%.. would that kind of tick off the admiission consultants..

whats the opinion here.. how much they should leave for improvement vs saying everything top 5%..

????
