I plan to sit for GMAT within the next 6months, however I plan to apply for colleges next year. How do I select the colleges where I can send scores for free, because I will only apply next year.

You'll get a 48-hour window (after you get your official score report) to send your score for free to up to 5 programs.­

Does the duration relate to the period after the receipt of official score report, or after the test date?

­If I apply a year later will colleges consider the score sent by GMAT a year earlier(since GMAT scores are valid for 5 years)?

They should (they have access to your score for the entire time between the time you send it and the time it expires). Worst case, they may ask to resend it in case GMAC does something funny.
