All the best with whatever decision you ultimately make. If you decide to retake, consider getting the ESR (Enhanced Score Report) of the 650.

Actually i gave all my exams online and no ESR can be obtain for the same. But definitely verbal is a huge roadblock. with a V28 i am assuming all 3 sections needs improvement

It comes down to your confidence in your ability to keep improving your GMAT score. What you have pulled off so far is impressive moving from 600 to 650. Do you think you can reasonably move from 650 to 690 or even 700? If so, I think you might want to consider applying again in the fall.

I would definitely target R1 as you are coming from a competitive demographic. That will help with admissions and potential scholarship money.

It also just makes sense for you not to drag out GMAT prep too much longer. Focus on the coming months before the 2023-2024 essay questions so you can be done with that and then turn your attention to the applications themselves.

If your confidence is not terrible strong, then accept UCSD. $45K is nice money and you will enjoy the experience.

Good luck,

Hello Gmat club members,

Need your help in my decision of pursuing my MBA. I score a GMAT of 650 (Q50,V28) on March 11th 2023. This was my 3rd attempt (610,600,650). As this was my last attempt before R3 i thought i will give it a shot and i applied to 4 schools
1. UCSD - Rady School of Management: I received an admission offer from UCSD with a $45,000 scholarship. The classes are scheduled to begin on September 25th.
2. Georgetown University - McDonough School of Business: I received a waitlist decision letter and have submitted my waitlist essay. The final result will be announced on May 31st.
3. McCombs School of Business: I received a denial decision letter.
4. USC Marshall: I submitted my application on April 13th and am currently waiting for an interview call

Now my acceptance date at UCSD is 31st May. Should i go to UCSD or wait for another year and give a 4th attempt to gmat and apply to better schools.
My profile : - I graduated in 2018 from IIT Delhi. I have a total of 5 years of experience (age 28) . I have worked with Deloitte, upGrad and few other startups which are unicorns now. I have experience in strategy and operations, product and project management. I am concerned about the placements prospects post my MBA from Rady. Also i was very keen to start my MBA journey in 2023.

Let me know what are your thoughts.

Hi RRbti hope this finds you well

You possess a strong undergraduate pedigree and valuable experience in the startups in India, both of which are highly valued by top B Schools. I would suggest not to rush into a decision if you have identified your verbal skills as a weakness and applied to schools later in the application season.

A significantly weaker performance in the verbal section raises doubts in the minds of admissions offices about your ability to communicate effectively in a diverse, international environment. Investing extra time and effort in this area can not only expand your options at higher ranked schools, but also address a weakness that could potentially impact your performance during and after the MBA program.

Thank you so much. this definitely helps. I can appear for another attempt for the 2024 intake. My only concern was the average age and average experience that B schools prefer perfectly fits 2023 intake and i also do not want to wait more. But as you said i will give a thought for R1.

Hi,

My immediate advice would be to ask you to retake the GMAT and apply again this year. That said, which b-schools you can crack depends on your overall profile, the nature of your work, your role, career progression, leadership demonstration etc. My assumption is that you went to IIT Delhi, so in all likelihood, you are good at academics (need to know your GPA). A better GMAT score should be achievable for you- the verbal section is where the problem is, so you need to put concerted effort in increasing it. Getting yourself a tutor can help
Looking at your current results, I can confidently say that your GMAT is holding you back at the programs where you applied (unless you have a vey dull profile). A better GMAT score can dramatically change the admits you receive. Also, if GMAT is not working out, take the GRE.

Regarding Rady - questions you should be asking yourself : do you see yourself making the best out of your experience at Rady? Do you see yourself as a alumnus of Rady?

You only do an MBA once and this is probably the last time you will study, so be sure you land at the place where you will enjoy the experience.
