Hi born222,

With a Q37/V20, you likely need to work on some of the 'content' areas that you'll face on Test Day before you get deep into your GMAT studies. For free math practice and help, I recommend that you set up an account at Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). The site is completely free and makes the learning a bit more fun and 'game-like' (as opposed to the dry academic approach taken by most books). While the site is vast, you should limit your studies to basic Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry. After spending a little time re-building those skills, you can start your GMAT studies. You might also want to work on some grammar practice for SCs. As I mentioned in my prior post, most GMAT Companies offer free resources to practice with - you might consider taking advantage of those resources - it might be that you don't need the class that you're considering.

Hello guys ,

I have completed the diagnostics of OG 15 and scored above average on everything excluding DS which i scored excellent . Specifically my scores were PS 18/24 DS 19/24 . RC 14 / 17 CR 11/17 SC 14/ 18.
I have also completed a diagnostic test from mba . c om but i wasn't very concentrated while taking it neither on quant nor verbal. I have faced time issues in verbal and was surprised to see a third passage coming during the end of test. My results were 37 quant (44%) and 20 verbal (20%) overall 510. I think if i were more concentrated my score would be around 540.

Hi born222,

Since you have just started your preparation, you need not worry much about the score. This an certainly be improved.
Your mock score shows a clear lack of fundamentals. In your preparation so far, how did you study? What material did you follow?

1. Did you take the test including AWA and IR?
2. Did you complete both the sections? (There is a high penalty if you do not complete a section)

Also, I would recommend you to refrain from taking tests until you have gone through all the fundamentals.
You need to build the concepts/fundamentals before you jump in solving the problems. While is seems that you have already made up your mind for classroom teaching, you can learn by choosing one of the following ways:

1. In person classes/private tutoring
2. Online classes
3. Self paced online preparatory course
4. Book heavy approach

Whatever you choose, make sure that you choose one. Because GMAT tests you on some concepts and fundamentals that you can learn from a course. Most of the preparatory companies including ours offer a free trial of our course. You can take the trial and see if the course suits your needs.
In addition to the preparatory material, buy the Official Guides(both the Official Guide and the Verbal Review), Question Pack 1 and the 4 official mock CATs. They should be an indispensable part of your preparation.

You need close to 3 months to prepare well for the GMAT.

1. Understand the concepts and fundamentals before jumping into problem solving
2. Solve full length CATs including AWA and IR. You can get two free GMAT Prep mock CATs and can purchase two more from mba.com
3. Make sure you solve the official questions from the Official Guide

today i did another test from mb a. com. I only did the verbal part because that is that part that worries me the most. Until question 30 i had 17 correct answers and 13 wrong. From the 2 passages that i encountered (RC) i managed to answer 5 out of 7 questions correctly. Then until the question 41 i had 10 wrong answers . I encountered stress and time issues towards the end of the exam. I was also impatient to see my final score and by the time i answered the last question i had almost 1:30 seconds left. The final score was an embarrassing 19.

I reviewed some of the last 10 questions and the second time i looked them i could find the correct answer.

I have decided that i will use a book heavy approach for my gmat preparation . Any suggestions? Are my english that bad? I have seriously started to question my abilities to communicate in the English language. Are my posts here in gmat club even grammatically correct?

Hi born222,

There are a number of things that you have to keep in mind regarding this recent score:

1) You really haven't studied at all, so it's not a surprise that this score (V19) is so close to your other score (V20) - you haven't developed any real skills yet, so it's not clear what you were expecting to happen when you took this Verbal section.

2) CATs are valuable 'measuring devices', but they're only as accurate as YOU make the 'CAT-taking process.' By skipping to the Verbal section, you didn't face any of the endurance or fatigue 'challenges' that you'll actually face on Test Day, so it's likely that this score is a bit 'inflated.' You should not 'waste' a CAT in this way ever again.

3) If you want to start off with some book-work before you decide whether or not to enroll in a class, then that's fine, but you shouldn't take another CAT for at least another 2-3 weeks.

yeah but what i am saying is if my verbal is so low now it won't make much of a difference in a few months time. I can't learn English in a span of four months. Have you seen anyone with such a low verbal in the beginning (who obviously isn't a native speaker) make it to 30-35?

Hi born222,

I'm not sure what your exact concern is, but your 'english skills' are fine. The GMAT is a big 'critical thinking' Test and every question you face will be based on a pattern of some kind (and sometimes more than one). Right now, you don't know any of the patterns, and it's unlikely that you're going to truly learn them from taking practice CATs. THAT is one of the reasons why you shouldn't take another CAT for a little while.

The GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN absolutely train to score at a higher level (and it's also not that difficult to score in the V30-V35 range - as it stands, about 40% of Test Takers score a V30 or higher). As long as you have the proper materials and the time/will to study properly, you can hit your score goals.

There are many people who have risen above from the same level. GMAT is not a test that tests your English. It is a test that tests your aptitude and the ability to think logically.

There are certain fundamentals that you can learn and ensure that you perform good on the GMAT.
Since you have decided to follow a book approach, make sure that you keep proper time lines for yourself.
You can see some examples of timelines here:
gmat-study-plan-how-to-start-your-gmat-prep-80727.html?fl=menu

While studying for various sub sections in verbal, keep the following things in mind.
SC: The questions test various concepts such as S-V agreement, modifiers, parallelism etc. Find out what troubles you.

CR: There might be certain types of questions that are troubling you. May be Assumption, may be conclusion, inference etc.
You need to find that out and then practice them

RC: This again can be drilled down into different types of questions and also different topics. See what questions and topics trouble you the most and then practice accordingly.

As an addition, start preparing an error log and keep a note of all the mistakes you made and the lessons you learnt from the problems. This will ensure you do not make the same mistake again.

All the best!
