Hello,
I am just starting my self-study plan but I have a question about books. I have read that the
MGMAT foundations books are great in combination with the
OG (I need a desperate refresher on math). I am not planning on taking the GMAT until next summer as a I have the JLPT to take in December. Between now and December I was going to do self study with the
MGMAT books and then take a Veritas Prep course. The Veritas Prep has the best times for me because I live in Japan, but I don't want to buy their set of books if I am going to get them through the purchase of the course.
Is it alright to use a few different company's books or would it become confusing or a waste of money? And should I get the full
MGMAT series (8 books) for self study until I start the Veritas Course sometime in January/February? I was looking more for a refresher of foundations and basics, and using the course to get into the details of what I will need to know.
My goal is to get a 680 or higher and enter a grad school in Tokyo or Kyoto in fall of 2015. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
People often study from various different sources so I don't see any reason for confusion. That said, I have another suggestion. You can enroll for a Veritas course upto 3 months in advance i.e. you can enroll right now for courses starting in December. If you want to start the course in Jan, you can enroll next month itself and you will get the Veritas books. The 12 books cover everything - starting from the basics to the advanced concepts. That way, you will have a good idea of our methodology before you start our classes. That should help you gain much more out of the actual course.
Meanwhile, this month you can get the OG13 and start looking at the various question formats. You can take the diagnostic and start working on the first few questions (which are relatively quite simple). Once you are done with the course, you can finish off with the advanced
OG questions, our advanced word problems book and practice tests (which you will get as a part of our package)
Also, after taking the diagnostic, if you feel that you need a high school refresher for Quant (say, if fractions, quadratic equations etc are a problem), you can use your high school books or websites such as purplemath.com, khanacademy.org etc to brush up on these concepts.
